Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg And Wife Are The Biggest Donors To Charity Last Year, See How Much They Gave

 By Ronald D. White
The two youngest people on the list of the
most generous Americans in 2013 also gave
more to charity than anyone else,
according to a report released Monday by
the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his
wife, physician Priscilla Chan, gave $992.2
million to the Silicon Valley Community
Foundation in San Mateo.
That marked the first time than anyone
under the age of 30 led the list, the
Chronicle said. Zuckerberg is 29 years old
and Chan is 28.
But a generational shift to younger donors
hasn’t materialized. Only seven on the list
were younger than 50. The median age of
the group was 72½.
The list of 50 top donors included
individuals and couples. All told, the list
consists of 69 people, 10 of whom had
passed away.
California was especially well represented
with 15 donors on the list. That was more
than any other state. New York was second
with 12 of the top donors, and Texas was
third with five.
More gifts from the top 50 went to
California charities and causes than to
those in any other state.
Colleges and universities were among the
most common recipients of large
donations, with 30 receiving gifts of $1
million or more.
Next on the list of those that received
donations of at least $1 million were
foundations (14) and hospitals and medical
centers (six).
Combined, the 50 biggest U.S. donors gave
away about $7.7 billion in 2013, which was
4% more than in the previous year.
