ASUU strike: Our leaders are clueless – Union carpets FG over deadline, vows to continue action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, today wholly castigated the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike.
The union at a sensitization match Sunday morning, stated that Wike displayed ignorance by issuing sack threat to over 60, 000 lecturers in the country.
Recall that the Minister, last Wednesday on behalf of the Federal Government, ordered the striking lecturers to call off its action by December 4 or lose their jobs.
Reacting, ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan, UI, Olusegun Ajiboye, said the Minister’s statement was an indicated that he had no faintest idea of the process involved in recruitment of staff into the university.
“The university system has a standing process of recruiting its teachers which often takes a whole session, at the least”, he said.
“It means that the federal government was designing a plan to keep students at home till the middle of next year after which recruitment may have been completed.”
Ajiboye, who led about 200 UI lecturers on the protest which kicked off at UI entrance gate and car park, accused the Federal Government of not having a clear vision for its policies.
The members at the rally wore T-shirts with inscriptions such as “Walk out the Beasts in our system”, “Work out and work to save public education”, “FG walk the path of honour”, and “Annulment of agreements, a comedy of errors.”
Addressing his colleagues, the leader said “It shows cluelessness in those leading us. The same police that has not been able to stop kidnapping, armed robbery, oil theft, or arrest corrupt politicians now becomes a tool of democratic oppression in the hands of our policy makers.
“They will all fail. Will the police come to the campuses with new hostels, laboratories, lecture rooms, Internet or what does Wike mean by they will provide enabling environment.
“It is important for him to know that apart from politicians, no Nigerian worker has an enabling working environment,” he posited.
Speaking further, Ajiboye denied reports that the Union made new demands in its letter to President Goodluck Jonathan.
On the deployment of police officers to university campuses, he described it as a waste of personnel, insisting that the lecturers would not call off the strike.
The Chairman maintained that only the implementation of the agreed resolutions could bring an end to the impasse and not deployment of security agents.
ASUU embarked on the ongoing action on July 1 over failure of the government to implement the agreement both parties reached in 2009.

Fans hold candlelight vigil for Fast & Furious star, Paul Walker (PHOTO)

Paul Walker fans paid tribute to the 40-year old actor last night by holding a candlelight vigil on the site where he died.
The fans showed up in Santa Clarita Saturday evening … leaving flowers and lighting candles in Paul’s memory.
The vigil was held very shortly after law enforcement cleared the scene — removing the bodies of Paul and the driver Roger Rodas … as well as the charred wreckage of Roger’s Porsche Carrera GT.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, but witnesses tell us Roger was speeding at the time. Sheriff’s deputies confirm speed definitely played a part.

Joint wedding for P-Square?

P-Square are reportedly planning to have a joint white wedding.
This comes after one of the identical twin brothers, Peter recently had his traditional wedding.
His brother, Paul said they couldn't have their traditional weddings on the same day because of cultural differences.
Paul's fiancé, Anita Isama, is from Kogi and Peter's wife is Yoruba.
Paul said, "So because im dey marry Yoruba woman, wey dem go do am here, if my own na from Kogi, all of us go do am for Lagos? Make una chill. That's why it's a traditional marriage. You do it in a girl's home. When I go do my own, I will do it in her home."
Paul added, "If na for white wedding, I will answer you" prompting speculation that their white wedding will be on the same day.

NAFDAC closes 54 sachet water factories

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday said that the agency had sealed 54 table water producing factories in the Niger state.
The NAFDAC Coordinator in Niger, Mr Dadi Mantum, said this at news conference in Minna.
He said that the 54 sachet water factories were closed in Suleja and Minna for allegedly contravening the agency's regulations.
Mantum said that the agency took the action following tip-offs that the factories were operating illegally, adding that the factories were closed as part of efforts to protect public health.
He stressed that NAFDAC would strive to be more proactive, warning that it would sanction any individual or organisation found wanting in compliance with extant regulations on water packaging.
"It is the simple laws that we are going to enforce. These include laws on hygiene, cleanliness, proper storage of water, proper mode of transportation and employment of correct personnel.
"We have decided that these simple laws would be enforced.
"Acquisition of equipment is not enough. In fact, these producers buy equipment which is quite expensive.
"We, however, need to enforce the laws on hygiene so as to guarantee that the sachet water being produced is fit for human consumption," he said.
The NAFDAC coordinator identified lack of personnel as one of the limitations which constrained the agency from getting to the grassroots regularly.
Mantum said that with the assistance of the state government, task forces were being set up to carry out the enforcement of health standards in the rural areas.
"We are constrained when is comes to reaching out to the people in the rural areas as regularly as we do with the people in urban areas.
"That’s why there is still much disparity between monitoring in the urban and rural areas," he said.
